Herschelle Gibbs got South Africa ahead of the run rate required early on with a 48 ball half century.
Wickets started to fall but an unbeaten 93* to Jaques Kallis ensured the rate required was never much more than a run a ball and in the end South Africa won by 5 wickets.
Darren Gough bowled well but the England middle order had let them down earlier in the day and South Africa never seemed in any real trouble despite winning with just 2 balls to spare.

Nasser Hussain with 44 off 43 balls gave England a quick start and when he was out the score stood at 73/1 off 11.4 overs.
Though Graeme Hick took a while to settle, Alec Stewart was in good touch at the other end and it seemed England were headed for a big score.
Wickets fell in the slog overs and England failed to accelerate at the death, leaving their innings closed at 223/6 after 50 overs.
England captain Alec Stewart batted throughout the innings for an unbeaten 107* off 131 balls but after Graeme Hick fell the rest of the batting was disappointing.
South African captain Hansie Cronje troubled everyone with his medium pace and his 4 wickets were crucial in resticting England to a moderate total.
The rest of the South African attack was poor but England failed to capitalise, looking perhaps 20 runs short of par at the halfway stage of the match.

The first series I will report on is a 1999 ODI World Cup in England.
The tournament will feature the 9 Test teams playing in 1999 plus Bangladesh who I will give Test status a few years earlier than real life in my games.
The tournament will feature a round robin between all 10 teams with the top 4 teams making the Semi-Finals.
Due to the extra length of the tournament I have increased squad sizes to 17 to allow for the harsh but fun Injury rules available for the game.
There will be a few changes to the real life squads in my game, non Test players being unavailable for example.
I will introduce each squad before their first match, but for now I will just post the Schedule for the preliminary matches.
The tournament will follow the 2019 World Cup schedule with Zimbabwe replacing Afghanistan.
